121Ethiopia is an organisation founded in 2005 by artist Olafur Eliasson and art historian Marianne Krogh Jensen to improve the conditions of orphans in Ethiopia.
The organisation strives to make childhood enjoyable in its own right. Through improvement of the physical and mental environment of the orphans, it works to meet the needs of the children, facilitating their development into trusting and responsible individuals who can make lives for themselves and actively contribute to society.
121Ethiopia enlists the commitment and active participation of local government and other authorities not only to ease the integration of the NGO structure, but also to give the local project collaborators a sense of responsibility that may generate pride and self-esteem.
Vision, Mission and Values
121Ethiopia envisages each orphan receiving warm, sensitive care, having a healthy and enjoyable childhood and growing up to be productive members of society. The overriding mission of the organisation is to contribute to current efforts being made to change the lives of orphans in Ethiopia. 121Ethiopia will achieve its mission by:
* Addressing the physical and psychological needs of orphans
* Conducting educational training for caregivers working in orphanages
121Ethiopia aims to work on a modest scale in order to follow every step of the development projects. This ensures that donations are spent as effectively as possible. Hence the name 121 – one to one – originates from the idea that one dollar donated is one dollar dedicated to the project; no administrative are deducted from donations.
